Siemens VL Molded Case Circuit Breakers - Technical Overview
Introduction
The intelligent simplicity of the Siemens VL circuit breakers, with its modularity, ease of use, global ratings, compact size and flexibility make it one of the most versatile circuit breaker families available. The inherent value of these features improves the cost effectiveness of most distribution system designs and ultimately the users bottom line.
Presenting the Siemens VL family of molded case circuit breakers. Minimum parts with maximum applications. A global family of beakers that meet or exceed all key worldwide standards.A flexible new line with many true advantages:
Simple Versatility
The modular and flexible design of Siemens VL circuit breakers allow for last minute adaptation, forgives changes in system design, and reduces inventory to give a very cost effective choice of configurations. Likewise, with gclick-in-placeh internal accessories, these breakers are modified faster, with less complexity and fewer parts than before. With electronic trip settings and an integral display for 60A breakers, plus thermal-magnetic trip units available through 1600A, the range of applications is unsurpassed. For mounting, there is an extensive variety of terminals, shields, bus connectors, variable angle connectors, plug-in bases with safety interlocks, and draw-out assemblies, which together set a new standard of adaptability.
Just two families of common internal accessories cover the complete range of VL breakers. The accessories are field installable and conveniently located in isolated pockets behind the front cover. No special tools are required.
The intuitiveness and ease of use eliminate the need for special training and significantly reduce installation time.
Its compact size saves panel space, which can reduce the overall space, material requirements, and cost for the distribution equipment.
This global design with a common foot print for UL and IEC applications presents a standardized solution that, as part of a global family of power distribution equipment, can be used in most countries under the most common electrical standards.
Versions
The Siemens VL circuit breakers are available with Normal (N), High (H), and Very High (L) interrupting ratings. Protection options include 3 types of thermal-magnetic trip units, electronic trip units, and electronic trip units with a built-in LCD display. All of which are fully interchangeable, within rating requirements. The VL family also includes Motor Circuit Protectors, Motor StarterApplications, and Molded Case Switches.
Standards and Specifications

Communications / System Solutions
In addition to circuit protection, the VL breakers are also about performing within the larger system of power distribution. The VL breakers can be integrated with a monitoring and protection system via Profibus or Modbus protocols. Tying VL breakers to other Siemens power distribution products has the immediate advantage of compatible technologies, cost effective installations, and a wide range of tech support, in addition to monitoring and control capability.
Similarly, with features like "Out of the Box" Ground Fault Coordination, trip units with an integral display and laptop programmability, plus a host of field installable accessories, the VL breaker family can easily fit into your design schemes. We understand the value of a clean fit and this product family includes the components for good mechanical as well as electrical coordination with your system.
